After an especially difficult mental health episode, each person’s healing journey can look very different. It can take weeks or even months to recover and start feeling like yourself again. Regardless of how long it takes, most times you will hit a point in your healing journey when it just feels like too much. Day after day of putting in the work while not always seeing the progress can lead to feelings of despair, hopelessness, and wanting to give up. During these times, it is crucial to have tools to stay on the path towards healing.
Set aside some time to have a mental check-in with yourself.
When life starts to feel overwhelming, the best thing to do is take a step back and check in with yourself. One way of performing this check-in is journaling. Writing in a journal should be a very personal and authentic way to sort through your emotions. Journal about what is currently causing you stress or frustration and then evaluate if there is anything you can add or remove from your life to help alleviate some of the mental strain.
Look back and acknowledge the progress you’ve already made.
If you have regularly struggled with mental health for a while, you know that there can be really high highs and really low lows. It is important to look back on your journey and remember that you’ve managed to pull yourself out of those extremely low periods each time. There were most likely times in your life when you didn’t believe you were strong enough to keep pushing but you still did. Take a deep breath and acknowledge your own power and resilience.
Reach out to your care provider.
There is only so much you can do on your own and it may be time to ask for help. Whether it be a therapist, psychiatrist, or primary care physician, your health care professional will be able to guide you through this difficult time. Schedule an appointment as soon as possible and be honest with them about your current mental state. Your provider will be able to work with you in setting up a game plan for moving forward in the healing process.
